He makes each lesson fun, and you get the benefit of someone with a vast musical background.  I've learned songs by Bruddah Iz AND by AC/DC!

Stuart will tailor your lesson to whatever you want to learn, and then take you further.

- Debbie T.

I tried two other instructors and knew after the first lesson that they were not what I was looking for. Stuart was my third try, and I knew right away he could teach me what I wanted to learn about the ukulele.

Tune your Ukulele with an iPhone

Posted by Stuart Yoshida in ukulele , news , gadgets

Ukulele tuning with iPhone

Here's where I try to make the hard-core Peterson Strobe Tuner fans jealous.  The picture on the right shows me tuning my ukulele with the iStroboSoft app on an iPhone 3G.  I have the Peterson TP-2 clip on contact mic and the Peterson audio jack adapter for the iPhone.  I ordered the adapter on the Peterson website ($17.94 with shipping), the Peterson TP-2 Tuning Pickup on Amazon ($12.63 with shipping), and got the iStroboSoft app ($9.99) on iTunes.  Total cost for a genuine Peterson tuner: $40.56.  The iPhone app works fine without the adapter and clip-on mic, so you could just get the app for $9.99 and have a super-killer deal on a Strobe Tuner.  Nice!

Summer gig at Lundeen House

Book 'em Danno gig at Lundeen House

Book 'em Danno played a fun gig this past weekend at the Lundeen House (famous bronze sculture artists and foundry owners in Loveland, Colorado).  What a gorgeous property right off the Big Thompson river!  It was a benefit for the Boys and Girls Club of Larimer County.  Kathi Wright, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, welcomed us with the Aloha Spirit. Good food, too, from the Outback Steak House.  They really treated us right. Sometimes it pays to be a musician :-)

If At First You Don't Succeed...

Posted by Stuart Yoshida in ukulele , news , lessons , gadgets

Well, my first attempt at recording student lessons had limited success, to say the least.  I think I successfully recorded only one "full" session with a student.  The other times I tried recording the lesson I would only get about half of it before the recording program went south.  Grrrr.

So this time, for sure!  Riiiiiight.

Seriously, this new App I got really seems promising.  Since I'm still working out the kinks, I'll be recording the lessons as complimentary learning material for my students.  Let me know what you think.  I'm open to suggestions.

Ukulele tuning - yeah, there's an app for that

Posted by Stuart Yoshida in ukulele , news , gadgets

Strobotuner

This isn't an Apple commercial, but if you don't own an iPhone you might want to skip this article.  There's something coming that I think is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we'll see in the future.

I got turned on to this iPhone app while recording our next Danno CD (okay, now THIS is a plug for our upcoming album, so stay tuned for more info).  Chris, our steel guitar player, told me about an app for less than $10 that did the job of a $200 Peterson tuner.  In fact, the app was written by the good folks at Peterson, so it will likely work just as well as one of their standalone hardware tuners.

I bought the app, and soon I was tuning my ukulele with a honest-to-goodness Peterson Strobotuner.  Nice!  For those in the know, the Peterson Strobotuners are the Porsches of tuners.  If you're serious about your music, you've probably run across a Peterson tuner.

So where am I going with this?  Well, I believe that the hardware platform for a lot of our musical needs might be already in the palm of our hands.  It's the smartphone.  And since we're already made the capital investment in the hardware, the software apps should end up costing pennies on the dollar compared to their "Big Brother" incarnations (i.e., a $200 Peterson Strobostomp box versus the $10 iPhone app), so you can see where this might be headed.

I don't know where this will all end up, but maybe someday I'll be playing a virtual ukulele on my cell phone.

Something Different - the Merry Monarch Festival

Posted by Stuart Yoshida in news , events

Even though this isn't directly related to the ukulele, if you want to watch a real slice of Hawaiian culture and music, check out the Merry Monarch Festival that is held annually in Hilo, Hawaii.  If you listen closely to many of the meles (songs) that are played, you can hear the Olapa Strum.  Let me know if you can hear the rhythm.

Hilo is a sleepy little town on the Windward side of the Big Island (that's the one with all the active volcanoes).  But once a year it becomes the home of the best hula performances in the world.

They have the performances available on the Internet from a local TV station (KITV).  Here's the link: http://www.kitv.com/video/19221425/index.html
